Millennials seems to be the word on the tip of everyone’s tongues when it comes to business. A recent demographic trend, it best describes those professionals who were born in the mid-90s. The question everyone is asking is how will this new generation of young professionals contribute to our society: how will they change the business landscape? How will they interact with the existing workforce?
The questions surrounding millennials in the workplace are becoming more and more common, especially in Africa. Due to the ‘youth bulge’ Africa is experiencing at the moment, businesses must re-evaluate millennials’ position in their organigram and the importance of retaining this talent in recruitment.
According to the UN, Africa’s total population is on a trajectory to hit 2.5 billion by 2050 (around 25% of the total world’s population). Coupled with this rather astonishing fact is what researchers refer to as the ‘youth bulge’: there are an estimated 200 million people aged between 15 and 24 across the continent.
